The best time to exercise is the time that works consistently for you. That's the honest answer and nothing I say after this should override it. Consistent exercise at a non-ideal time beats occasional exercise at the perfect time every single time.
That said, there are genuine advantages to training at different points in the day. Here's what the evidence suggests and what I personally do.
I prefer to go for a walk early in the morning and do my resistance training in the late morning on an empty stomach. I've trained this way for years and it suits my body, my schedule and how I feel. I load up on complex carbohydrates the evening before to fuel my morning workout.
But this is what works for me. The most important thing is finding what works for you.
Morning is the most popular exercise time for good reason. Here's why it suits many people.
Better consistency
Morning exercise creates a routine and makes you less likely to skip workouts as the day gets busier. There are generally fewer unexpected events or obligations competing with a morning session compared to afternoon or evening.
Energy and mental clarity for the day
Morning exercise provides a genuine energy boost. It wakes up your body and mind, sharpens focus and improves productivity throughout the day. Many people find their best work happens in the hours following a morning workout.
Metabolism boost
Physical activity in the morning kickstarts your metabolism, helping your body burn calories more efficiently for the rest of the day. Particularly useful if weight management is one of your goals.
Improved mood
Exercise releases endorphins. Starting your day with a workout can reduce stress, anxiety and the symptoms of low mood. A morning workout is one of the most reliable mood management tools I know.
Better sleep
Regular morning exercise helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle. It aligns your body's natural circadian rhythm and can contribute to more restful sleep.
If mornings don't work for you, the afternoon has its own genuine advantages.
Higher body temperature
Body temperature rises naturally through the morning. By the afternoon your muscles are warmer, more flexible and less prone to injury. This can be particularly valuable for activities requiring flexibility or a wide range of motion.
Peak energy for many people
Some people's energy and alertness genuinely peak in the early to mid-afternoon. If that's you, training during this window can mean better performance and more intensity in your sessions.
Stress relief mid-day
An afternoon workout can serve as a mental reset from work. It clears your mind, improves mood and allows you to return to your tasks with renewed focus.
Social opportunities
Afternoon classes and group sessions are common at most facilities. If social exercise motivates you, the afternoon often offers more options.
For people with busy mornings and afternoons, the evening may be the only realistic option. And it works perfectly well.
Stress relief after work
Evening exercise is a natural way to decompress after a demanding day. The physical activity releases tension, clears the mind and provides a genuine transition between work and rest.
Stronger muscles by evening
By the evening your body has fully warmed up and your muscles are at their most flexible. This can enhance performance in strength and flexibility-based exercise.
Better sleep for many people
Despite the common claim that evening exercise disrupts sleep, evidence suggests this varies significantly between individuals. Many people sleep better after an evening workout. The key is to finish training at least 90 minutes before bedtime to allow your heart rate and body temperature to settle.
Time availability
If your mornings and afternoons are genuinely busy, the evening may simply be the most practical choice. The best workout is the one you actually do.
The most important thing is consistency. Find a time that fits your life and make it a non-negotiable appointment with yourself. Regular exercise at a consistent time becomes habitual, and habits are what produce lasting results.
Health should feel like your best life, not a break from it.
