A home gym is ideal for getting and staying in great shape when a commercial gym doesn't appeal to you or simply doesn't fit your life. I'm not saying a home gym is better than a commercial one. Both have their advantages. But for me personally, when my local gym is too crowded or I don't feel like making the trip, I head straight to my garage gym and get it done.
Work out at home if an overcrowded, noisy environment, waiting around for equipment, making small talk or sharing other people's sweat doesn't appeal to you. I understand completely.
Freedom and convenience
One of the biggest advantages of a home gym is the freedom it gives you. Find some space indoors or outdoors and start with just your bodyweight. Add equipment over time as your budget and goals evolve. Training from home allows me to train whenever I want, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without worrying about gym hours or commuting. It saves time, gives me more family time and makes sticking to a regular routine significantly easier.
Cost-effective over time
Setting up a home gym requires an initial investment but it's more cost-effective in the long run. No gym memberships, no transportation costs, no childminding fees. You can start with little or no equipment and build your collection over time. After the initial investment there are no ongoing costs.
Privacy and comfort
Work out in complete privacy without feeling self-conscious or observed. Wear what you want. Play your music out loud. Take your time. No judgment, no distractions, no waiting. This alone makes a home gym worth it for a lot of people.
Personalised equipment
You choose exactly what equipment suits your specific goals and preferences. My garage gym is set up precisely for the way I train and nothing in it is wasted. Every piece earns its place.
Always clean and tidy
My home gym is always clean and tidy. Public gyms can be crowded and unclean. Nothing worse than walking in and seeing weights spread across the floor or puddles of sweat left on benches. At home, you control the environment entirely.
Family friendly
A home gym is a great way to encourage your family to stay active. My wife and I both use our garage gym regularly. It provides an opportunity for everyone to exercise together and it sets a great example for my son.
No waiting
No waiting for equipment to free up. No watching someone do a 20-minute phone session between sets on the only bench available. Everything in your home gym is immediately available to you.
Weather independent
Rain, heat, cold. None of it matters when your gym is 30 steps from your kitchen.
Space
Ideal spaces for a home gym include a garage, spare room, bedroom, living room, verandah, basement, backyard or outbuilding. Our home gym is in the garage, 6 metres by 6 metres with a 2.7 metre ceiling and solid floor. That's a generous space but it's not necessary to start.
If you just want to do bodyweight and core exercises, slightly more than a yoga mat will do. HIIT workouts need a bit more room and a sturdy floor. For resistance and weight training, a minimum of 3 metres by 3 metres with a 2.5 metre ceiling height is a practical starting point.

Design
Your gym should inspire you to use it. That means making it bright, well ventilated and visually inviting. Our garage provides plenty of natural light and airflow when the door is open, which is most of the time. We also positioned the gym so we walk past it constantly throughout the day. That visibility is a constant reminder and motivation.
Consider integrating your gym into a living area if you don't have a spare room or garage. A corner of a living room with a pull-up bar, a kettlebell and a mat is a legitimate home gym.
Added features
A full-length mirror is worth having both to check your form and to make the space feel larger. Storage is important too. Decide whether your gym is a permanent fixture or something you pack away. If you're packing up after sessions, storage containers or a dedicated cupboard will keep things organised. Wall hooks and shelving keep equipment accessible and the floor clear.
Flooring
Rubber flooring tiles are the best investment for a home gym floor. They protect your actual flooring, absorb impact, reduce noise and provide a stable surface for lifting. They're affordable and can be installed yourself in an afternoon.
Now for the best part of setting up your home gym: the equipment.
I get asked constantly what the best exercise equipment is. My answer is always the same: it depends. It depends on your available space, your budget, your goals and which equipment you find most enjoyable to use. That last one is often the most important factor of all.
The best advice I can give is to buy and use equipment that suits your training style, your goals and what will provide you with the best results over the long term. Equipment you enjoy using is equipment you'll actually use.

Now for the most important part of your home gym setup. You'll see the most significant benefits when you have a clear plan and use your gym consistently.
Don't make the mistake many people make when they set up a home gym or take out a gym membership. They jump in without a specific, meaningful, long-term goal to keep them motivated when things get hard. And things will get hard. Everyone goes through periods of boredom, loss of motivation, stalled progress or setbacks. A clear goal and a plan for those moments is what separates people who sustain the habit from those who let the equipment gather dust.
Break your long-term goal into short-term targets. Challenge yourself to do a little better each workout. Progress doesn't have to be dramatic to be real.
