Jump Rope

Cheap, Portable, Highly Effective and Actually Fun

Jump rope, also known as a skip rope or skipping rope, might be the most underrated training tool available. It can improve cardiovascular fitness, coordination, balance, endurance and agility. It burns a serious amount of calories and, if you let it, it's genuinely fun.

You can get all of this without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on cardio machines or a gym membership. A good jump rope costs less than a decent meal out.

Which jump rope is right for you?

Jump ropes come in different lengths and materials. For beginners, PVC or leather ropes are the easiest to use. Spending a few extra dollars to get a quality one makes a real difference in feel and control.

As your skill improves, a speed rope is worth investing in. Designed with a thin PVC rope and ball bearings in the handles for fast rotation, speed ropes help develop coordination and agility at a higher level. They'll also keep you motivated as your ability progresses.

For length, stand in the middle of the rope. The handles should reach close to your armpits. This is your correct rope length.

Six genuine benefits of jumping rope

1. Improved coordination

Jump rope requires your hands and feet to work in precise coordination. They have to move in tune to maintain rhythm, especially as the jump style becomes more complex. This coordination benefit transfers directly into sport performance, particularly for activities requiring quick footwork like boxing, tennis and basketball.

2. Cardiovascular fitness

Jump rope is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve cardiovascular fitness. Your heart and lungs are challenged from the first skip. You can include it as a standalone cardio session, at the end of a resistance workout or as part of a HIIT session.

3. Warm-up tool

Three to five minutes of simple skipping before a workout gets your heart rate up, warms every major muscle group and raises your core body temperature. For beginners, start with 1 minute of skipping followed by 1 minute of rest for three rounds as a warm-up.

4. Burns significant calories

Jump rope burns over 10 calories per minute. It recruits almost every muscle group with explosive continuous movement, making it one of the most calorie-efficient forms of cardio available. The more muscle you recruit, the more calories you burn.

5. Builds strength

Skipping is resistance training for your whole body, particularly your calves, hamstrings, core, shoulders and arms. It strengthens the muscles in your feet and around your ankles and teaches you to jump on the balls of your feet, improving foot coordination and ankle stability over time.

6. Improved agility

Jump rope is an excellent plyometric exercise that develops explosive power, speed and agility. These qualities transfer directly into almost any sport and into everyday movement as you age.

Health should feel like your best life, not a break from it.
