One thing I genuinely pride myself on is being able to maintain a healthy weight throughout my life. Not through extreme discipline or perfect eating, but through consistent habits, good food and staying physically active. It has paid off in more ways than I can count.
We all know that maintaining a healthy weight is essential for good health. We also know that poor eating habits and insufficient movement are the primary reasons people become overweight. But knowing and doing are two different things. Here's what maintaining a healthy weight actually gives you, and how to achieve it.
While the health benefits are real and important, it's the quality-of-life reasons that tend to be the most motivating. Here's what my clients and I have experienced firsthand.
1. Physical wellbeing
Being at a healthy weight reduces the risk of developing various chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer. Better physical functioning leads to a better overall quality of life.
2. Increased energy levels
Carrying excess weight puts additional strain on the body, making everyday activities more tiring. My clients often share that once they reach a healthier weight, they can play and run with their children because they feel lighter, have more energy and don't get out of breath as easily.
3. Improved mental health
There is a strong link between weight and mental health. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight consistently improves self-confidence, body image and overall mental wellbeing for my clients.
4. Enhanced mobility and flexibility
Excess weight limits mobility, making simple tasks like walking, climbing stairs or bending down harder. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy range gives you back a wider range of movement and a more active life.
5. Better joint health
Extra weight puts more stress on your joints. My clients regularly report that joint pain reduces significantly when they lose weight. Maintaining a healthy weight also lowers the risk of developing osteoarthritis as you age.
6. Better sleep quality
Obesity and overweight are associated with sleep disorders including sleep apnea and insomnia. Better sleep supports hormone regulation, immune function, heart health, concentration, memory and stress levels.
7. Food tastes better
Being overweight can actually alter how you perceive flavours. Inflammation, which often accompanies excess body fat, can cause taste dysfunction. Several of my clients have shared that their taste buds genuinely improved after losing weight. The good news is your palate can recover.
8. Better immune system
Excess body fat can weaken your immune system. Maintaining a healthy weight supports a stronger immune response and reduces the frequency of getting sick.
9. Safer surgery and childbirth
People with excess body fat have a higher risk of complications during and after surgery. Maintaining a healthy weight helps prevent complications and supports faster recovery.
10. Increased longevity
Maintaining a healthy weight is associated with a longer lifespan. By avoiding the health risks of obesity, you increase your chances of living a longer, healthier and more active life.
Maintaining a healthy body weight involves a combination of healthy eating habits, regular movement and sustainable lifestyle changes. Here's what works.
1. Eat a balanced diet
Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your diet. Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks and excessive amounts of saturated fats. The Mediterranean approach I follow makes this feel natural rather than forced.
2. Portion control
Be mindful of your portion sizes and avoid overeating. Use the hand portion method from Precision Nutrition as your guide. No scales or calorie counting required.
3. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Thirst is frequently mistaken for hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking.
4. Limit sugary foods and drinks
Reduce your intake of sugary snacks, desserts and beverages. They are high in calories and provide little nutritional value.
5. Regular physical activity
Engage in regular exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. This can include walking, strength training, cycling, swimming or any movement you genuinely enjoy.

6. Avoid sedentary behaviour
Limit the amount of time you spend sitting. Incorporate movement into your daily routine. I average over 14,000 steps a day and it makes an enormous difference.
7. Get enough sleep
Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night. Lack of sleep disrupts your metabolism and increases cravings for unhealthy foods.

8. Manage stress
Find healthy ways to manage stress such as walking, hobbies, reading, time outdoors or seeking support from friends and family. Stress can lead to emotional eating and weight gain.
9. Set realistic goals
Focus on making long-term lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes or fad diets. Sustainable progress beats dramatic short-term results every time.
10. Seek support
Surround yourself with supportive people who share your values. A health and fitness buddy makes consistency feel effortless. My wife has been a genuine catalyst in how I live.
Maintaining a healthy body weight is a lifelong journey. Be patient and kind to yourself along the way.
