Tyre training can build strength and explosive power or simply add meaningful variety to your functional training. Just so we're clear: over here in Australia, it's spelled tyre, not tire. 🤣
A tyre workout is both challenging and fun. It tests your strength, power, endurance and coordination simultaneously. The tyre is probably one of the cheapest and most underrated pieces of fitness equipment available. In most cases you can get them for nothing.
Anybody can do tyre training regardless of their athletic background or current fitness level. The strength and conditioning benefits can help improve overall fitness and enhance performance across virtually any sport. Training with tyres is not reserved for strongman competitors. It's a legitimate and effective tool for anyone who wants to build functional strength and conditioning.

If you have the room at home, getting two or three different sized tyres is ideal. A large truck, bus or tractor tyre, a 4WD tyre and a standard car tyre give you a range of weights and exercise options.
Large truck, bus or tractor tyre
Choose a large tyre that is heavy enough to challenge you but safe to handle. Because of their diameter and weight, these bigger tyres are best for flipping, deadlifts, farmer's carries and team-based exercises. The tyre flip is the classic large tyre exercise: a combination of strength, power and technique that challenges the entire posterior chain.
Car and 4WD tyres
These small to medium tyres still provide effective workouts and a wide variety of exercises. They're also a useful stepping stone for building the strength and conditioning to eventually work up to larger tyres.
Search online for your local car and commercial tyre service centres. Ask if they're throwing out any used tyres. Most tyre service places are happy for you to take used tyres off their hands at no cost. It saves them disposal fees.
A standard car tyre is the easiest to source. Go to your local car tyre centre or ask friends and family if they're due for new tyres soon. For a bigger tyre, try truck, bus or tractor service centres. Be direct, friendly and bring a ute or trailer.
Health should feel like your best life, not a break from it.
