How to Lose Belly Fat and Love Handles

Why It's Stubborn and What Actually Works

Lose belly fat and love handles. Two of the most common goals I hear from clients and two of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of fat loss.

Belly fat, also known as visceral fat, doesn't just affect how you look. It's directly associated with serious health risks including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Love handles are those stubborn pockets of fat that accumulate around the waistline. Both can be reduced through the right combination of diet, exercise, stress management and lifestyle changes. But the rate and pattern of fat loss vary from person to person, and there are specific reasons why this area is typically the last to go.

Why belly fat and love handles are always the last to go

Genetics

Each person's genetic makeup determines their body shape and fat distribution. Some people naturally store more fat in the abdominal area, making it harder to lose from this region regardless of overall fat loss progress.

Hormonal factors

Hormones play a significant role in fat storage and distribution. Cortisol, the stress hormone, leads to increased fat storage in the abdominal area. Hormonal changes associated with ageing and menopause also contribute to increased belly fat.

Reduced blood flow

The abdominal region has relatively poorer blood supply compared to other areas. This makes fat mobilisation and breakdown slower in this area.

Insulin resistance

When the body becomes insulin resistant, fat storage in the abdominal area increases. This is commonly seen in conditions like pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Lifestyle factors

A sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, insufficient exercise and high stress levels all contribute to increased belly fat. These create an imbalance between calorie intake and expenditure that favours abdominal fat accumulation.

Eat a balanced, nutrient-dense diet

Focus on whole, unprocessed foods. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. Avoid or limit high-calorie processed foods, sugary snacks and beverages. There is no special diet for belly fat. The fundamentals of good nutrition are the foundation.

Create a calorie deficit

You cannot spot-reduce belly fat with ab exercises. You need to reduce your overall body fat percentage through a consistent calorie deficit. When your body fat drops, it drops everywhere including the belly.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps boost metabolism and aids digestion. Water is your primary drink. Everything else is occasional.

Low-intensity cardio

Brisk walking, jogging, cycling or swimming can be done daily and primarily uses body fat as fuel. Walking is my personal favourite because it's joint-friendly, sustainable and genuinely enjoyable. When I want to get to a low body fat, I aim for 60 minutes of brisk walking daily.

Strength training

Building muscle increases your resting metabolism, which means you burn more calories even when you're not exercising. Focus on compound exercises that target multiple muscle groups: squats, deadlifts, bench presses, pull-ups and rows. Aim for two to three sessions per week.

HIIT workouts

High-intensity interval training has been shown to be particularly effective at reducing body fat. Alternate between intense bursts of exercise and short recovery periods to maximise calorie burn and metabolic impact.

Reduce stress

Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which directly drives fat storage in the abdominal area. Meditation, deep breathing, hobbies, time outdoors and quality social connection all help. Managing stress is not optional if losing belly fat is your goal.

Get enough sleep

Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night. Lack of sleep disrupts appetite hormones and is directly associated with increased belly fat.

Limit alcohol

Alcohol is particularly strongly associated with abdominal fat accumulation. The term beer belly exists for good reason. Minimising alcohol is one of the most effective steps you can take to reduce belly fat.

Consistency and patience

Losing belly fat is a gradual process. It requires a sustained approach over weeks and months. Rushing or resorting to extreme measures can negatively impact your health and produce muscle loss alongside fat loss. Stay consistent and the results will come.

Health should feel like your best life, not a break from it.
